Alaska’s suicide prevention efforts get $100K boost from GCI

GCI Suicide Prevention Grant Program application period ends June 14, 2018

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Programs aiming to reduce Alaska’s suicide rate will receive thousands of dollars of funding this year through the GCI Suicide Prevention Grant Program. GCI has donated an additional $100,000 to the program in 2018 in response to the success of its 2016 grant. 

Combating Alaska’s high suicide rate

Alaska’s suicide rate is more than twice the national average. That number is even higher in the state’s rural areas.

To help Alaskans access the resources needed to combat this epidemic, GCI partnered with the Alaska Community Foundation two years ago to establish the GCI Suicide Prevention Grant Program. Nine local organizations received grant funds in 2016 and their success inspired GCI to fund the program again in 2018.

“After seeing the initial round of grantees use the funding to make a real difference, we knew it was just the tip of the iceberg in tackling such a critical statewide issue,” said GCI Chief Marketing Officer Kate Slyker. “GCI is committed to supporting suicide prevention and awareness programs throughout Alaska, and we hope our contribution helps give organizations the resources they need to keep moving those efforts forward.”

The 2016 grants were awarded to organizations across Alaska and reflect a variety of strategies that applicants believed were best suited to their communities. GCI partnered with the Alaska Community Foundation to help solicit and evaluate applications and to distribute funding to successful applicants.  

2016 grantees include: AK Child & Family, Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium, Covenant House Alaska, Juneau Youth Services, Kenai Peninsula Borough School District, Native Village of Paimiut, Native Village of Tununak, Perseverance Theater, Inc., and Wellspring Revival Ministries.

How to apply

Visit the GCI Suicide Prevention Grant Program to apply. Non-profit or equivalent organizations – including tribes, schools, churches, local government agencies and programs – are eligible. Applications must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 14, 2018.

Successful projects will:

  • Result in long term change by creating family, school and community support systems.
  • Help grow or support already successful programs.
  • Support programs that will be sustained by the community.
  • Support work that is happening on prevention, intervention, and crisis response.
  • Be managed by local entities or by an entity that will work with the local community.
  • Reflect Alaska cultural considerations.

Grant requests may be for up to $20,000. Awards typically range from $5,000 to $10,000. All projects must be completed within one calendar year.
