Cooper Landing wireless upgrades boost service on Kenai Peninsula just in time for popular sport fishery
ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Alaskans heading to the Kenai River to fill their freezers this week will notice faster service and a wider coverage footprint thanks to GCI LTE wireless network upgrades in the Cooper Landing area. The upgraded service will enable GCI customers to easily share the stunning turquoise views along the Kenai River and resolve Alaska’s continuous conundrum – who caught the biggest fish?
Network upgrades in the area are delivering LTE data and improved voice service to Cooper Landing and other summertime hot spots like the Kenai Lake Boat Launch, Russian River Campground and the confluence of the Russian and Kenai Rivers.
“Alaskans and visitors flock to the Russian and Kenai Rivers each summer and the direct path to everyone’s favorite fishing spot is usually through Cooper Landing,” said Greg Klimek, vice president, GCI Wireless Marketing. “Whether they are grabbing an ice cream at Grizzly Ridge or heading to the ferry for some combat fishing, the network improvements mean GCI customers will have faster wireless data speeds in a broader coverage area.”
The upgrades are part of a two-year, $6.3 million project to improve wireless service on the Kenai Peninsula. To date, 36 of the project’s 37 tower sites upgrades have been completed. The final site, near Sunrise Lodge outside of Cooper Landing, is expected to be complete this summer.
Since 2014, GCI has put more than $180 million into its wireless network and serves more than 240 communities. GCI is committed to growing its wireless footprint and improving service across Alaska. More than 97 percent of Alaskans are within GCI’s network.
GCI has improved or expanded service in more than 25 communities, so far, in 2018. GCI will launch wireless service and internet upgrades in more Alaska communities in the coming months.
