GCI supports racing tradition with continued sponsorship
ANCHORAGE, Alaska—For the 14th consecutive year, General Communication Inc. (GCI) will sponsor the 2017 GCI Open North American Championship Sled Dog Race, a three-day race that draws sprint mushers from around the world to compete in Fairbanks, Alaska.
“The GCI Open North American Championship is one of the most prestigious dog sled races in the world and we’re proud to be a part of the ONAC’s 72nd consecutive year,” said Perry Allen, director of regional operations. “It’s important to GCI to support Alaska’s longstanding traditions and sled dog racing is one of them.”
This year, the race start and finish line will be at the Musher’s Hall on the Jeff Studdert Race Grounds in Fairbanks. The race will begin at 1 p.m. on March 17. Sprint mushers will race 19.8 miles per day on Friday and Saturday, ending the race with a 27.5-mile stretch on Sunday. Prizes will be awarded at a banquet at 6 p.m. on Sunday.
GCI’s title sponsorship of the race includes telecommunication and logistical support on the trail, support from GCI volunteers, and a cash contribution of $15,000 for the race purse. GCI’s sponsorship also includes assisting with race advertising, maintaining the race web cam and broadcasting coverage of the race on GCI Channel 907 to enable Alaskans statewide to tune in to the action.
