Donation comes in the wake of fire that claimed city’s Bayside Restaurant
ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Even under ideal conditions, fighting fires is a challenging and dangerous undertaking. Fighting fires in the midst of a severe winter storm in Northwest Alaska is an entirely different matter, and the Kotzebue Volunteer Fire Department did just that late last year, battling a blaze that claimed the town’s popular Bayside Restaurant. To thank the brave first responders and support future response efforts, GCI has donated $5,000 to the department.
“GCI employees and their families live and work in Kotzebue. In fact, the GCI store is only a few minutes’ walk away from the Bayside Restaurant,” said Jenifer Nelson, senior manager of GCI Corporate Communications and Community Engagement. “We’re incredibly grateful to the first responders who worked through brutal conditions to keep the community safe. We’re making this donation to support the Kotzebue Volunteer Fire Department and their lifesaving efforts.”
GCI is one of Alaska’s leaders in corporate philanthropy, donating approximately $2 million each year in cash, products and connectivity to organizations across the state. GCI is committed to giving back to the communities it serves and provides employees with 16 hours of paid leave to volunteer with local organizations. In 2019, nearly 550 GCI employees volunteered more than 5,300 hours.
