Covenant House International President and CEO Honored As IditaRider By Longtime Supporter GCI During 2015 Iditarod Ceremonial Start
ANCHORAGE, ALASKA – To raise awareness about ongoing homelessness in Alaska, Covenant House International President and CEO Kevin Ryan will be traveling from New York City to attend the 2015 Iditarod Ceremonial Start as an IditaRider in partnership with GCI.
GCI has played an active role in helping Covenant House Alaska serve over 100 homeless youth a day and more than 3,800 individuals a year since the shelter opened in 1988. Covenant House Alaska’s doors are open all hours, every day to the community’s homeless, runaway and at-risk youth.
"For 25 years, GCI has helped support homeless youth who walk through the doors of Covenant House Alaska, allowing hundreds of formerly homeless youth to live happy, productive lives,” said Ryan. “We are so grateful to GCI for this unique opportunity to participate in the ceremonial start of the Last Great Race on Earth – what a unique way to take in Alaska’s beauty while generating greater public awareness of the needs of homeless youth.”
Alaska’s largest telecommunications company continuously supports community efforts, contributing to nonprofit organizations across the state, including Covenant House Alaska in downtown Anchorage. For the 22nd consecutive year, GCI is sponsoring the 2015 Iditarod as the official communications provider bringing enhanced network, including broadband and LTE wireless services, to the trail.
“Similar to the experience on the Iditarod Trail, the homeless youth served by Covenant House overcome hardships on their path to success, including adverse weather, limited resources and often periods of isolation. As a long-time board member, I understand the crucial role that Covenant House plays in our community by providing a safe place for homeless Alaska youth,” said GCI’s Maureen Moore. “GCI fully supports Covenant House’s mission, and our hope is to raise awareness of this vital organization by inviting Mr. Ryan to be our IditaRider for the 2015 Iditarod.”
The 2015 Iditarod will kick off with a Ceremonial Start in Anchorage on Saturday, March 7, on Fourth Avenue beginning at 10 a.m.
