ANCHORAGE, ALASKA - Today GCI announced that, as part of its quest to re:DEFINE broadband in Alaska, it will be bringing fiber re:D broadband to Fairbanks before the end of 2016. This 1-gigabit broadband service will not only be the fastest Internet available in Alaska but will be comparable to the fastest speeds available in the entire United States.
“For more than 30 years, GCI has been committed to providing Alaskans the latest communications technology, and providing Fairbanks with the fastest possible broadband speeds with our fiber re:D service will be another example of that,” said GCI Senior Vice President and General Manager of Consumer Services Paul Landes. “At GCI, we know that people use technology to enhance their experiences throughout every aspect of life, and as Alaska’s premier telecommunications provider we’re proud to deliver this enhanced service to the Fairbanks community.”
Earlier this year GCI launched 4G LTE service in Fairbanks, providing increased speeds to GCI wireless customers with LTE-capable devices at no additional cost. GCI continues to improve its 4G LTE network in the Golden Heart City and around the state, and these upgrades give people a chance to download, stream multimedia and enjoy other online activities faster. Since being founded in 1979, GCI has invested more than $2 billion to bring the latest telecommunication technologies to Alaska, reflecting the company’s ongoing commitment to the innovation Alaska needs to support industry, education, health care, job growth and livability for today and the future.
The exciting developments regarding Fairbanks’ access to the fastest Internet and wireless speeds available were announced at today’s GCI Tech Quest, which brought the community to downtown Fairbanks for a scavenger hunt and offered event participants the opportunity to win a wide variety of prizes. In order to host this fun, family-friendly event, GCI partnered with a number of outstanding, community-minded local businesses, including Arctic Traveler’s Gift Shop, Jade Resale Boutique and Gifts, Lady Lee’s Antiques Emporium, Rock Valley Boutique, World Eskimo-Indian Olympics and Yukon Quest Sled Dog Race.
The grand prizes, the newly released and much sought-after smartphone and phablet, were awarded to one lucky winner, and Alaska Airlines also thrilled the crowd by giving away six round-trip tickets to anywhere the airline flies. In total, prizes awarded at today's GCI Fairbanks Tech Quest are valued at approximately $15,000.
“It was exciting to see six people walk away as winners of round-trip tickets to anywhere Alaska Airlines flies, and we know they will have a wonderful trip when they head to their dream destination,” said Alaska Airlines Regional Vice President Marilyn Romano.
In honor of GCI’s bringing upgraded re:D service to Fairbanks and on the heels of the company’s 4G LTE upgrade in the Golden Heart City, GCI presented additional Tech Quest winners with technology prizes, including five Apple iPhone 5s, five Samsung Galaxy S5 and nine Apple iPad Air, as well as five vouchers for a full year of a premium TV network subscriptions.
To ensure that everyone attending was truly a winner, GCI also gifted each participant with a free Video on Demand coupon, headphones and a GCI Great Alaska Shootout basketball.
