Steps to set-up email using Windows free programs.
Windows 8
The steps to set-up a GCI.net email in Windows 8 are in a seperate article, please click here to view that article titled “GCI.net Email Set-up for Windows 8 (Win8)”.
Outlook Express
1. Open Outlook Express
- From Start | All Programs or
- From the icon on the task bar or your desktop

2. Click on Tools from the menu bar

3. From the drop-down, highlight then click on Accounts.

4. Click on the Mail tab from the screen displayed.

5. Click on the Add button, then highlight and click on Mail.

6. Enter your name as you want it displayed on the return email address, then press Next.

7. Enter your email address then press Next.

8. Complete the screen with the following infomation:
- My incoming mail server is a: POP3
- Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP, or HTTP) server: Enter mail.gci.net
- Outgoing mail (SMTP) server: smtp.gci.net
- Press Next

9. Complete the following information:
- Account Name: Enter your username (normally the name before the @ symbol)
- Password: Enter your email account password
- It is your option if you want Remember password checked or not
- DO NOT CHECK “Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA), the check box should be empty
- Press Next

10. Click Finish.

11. At this time your email account can receive emails. The next several steps will enable your account to send emails using GCI’s mail servers.
12. Open Outlook Express.

13. Click on Tools from the menu bar.

14. From the drop-down, highlight then click on Accounts.

15. Click on the Mail tab from the screen displayed.

16. Highlight your email account and click the Properties button.

17. Click on the Servers tab.

18. Under Outgoing Mail Server, click the Check box next to “My server requires authentication”, Click OK.

19. Click Close.

20. Your mail account is completely set up and you should be able to send and receive email.
21. Click Send/Recive to retrieve email.

22. If you have mail in your GCI account, it will now move into your Outlook Express account.

Windows Live Mail Set-up or Windows Mail
1. There are several versions of Windows Live Mail. Basically all have the same setup screens for an email account, the main difference is the location to start creating an account.
Windows Live Mail 2011:
a. Open Windows Live Mail
b. Click the top left (folder), then from the drop-down select Options

c. Then select @Email Accounts.
d. Then select Add.

Windows Live Mail 2009
a. Open Windows Live Mail
b. From the left menu select Add e-mail account

c. Then select Add.

Windows Mail
a. Open Windows Mail.

b. From the menu bar select Tools then select Accounts.

c. Click Add.

2. Highlight E-mail Account and Press Next.

3. Enter the name you want displayed and click Next.

4. Enter your GCI.net email address and then click Next.

5. That will display:

6. Complete the following information:
- Incoming e-mail server type: Select POP3 (default)
- Incoming mail (POP3 or IMAP) server: Enter mail.gci.net
- Outgoing e-mail server (SMTP)name: Enter smtp.gci.net
- Check the box next to “Outgoing server requires authentication”
- Press Next

7. Enter the E-mail username (normally the name before the @ symbol) and your GCI.net email account password, then press NEXT.

8. Press Finish.

9. Your GCI.net email account is now setup and you should be able to send and receive email.
Outlook Express 6.0 Email Set-up
1. Open Outlook Express.
- From Start | All Programs or
- From the icon on the task bar or your desktop

2. Click on Tools from the menu bar.

3. From the drop-down, highlight then click on Accounts.

4. Click on the Mail tab from the screen displayed.

5. Click on the Add button, then highlight and click on Mail.

6. Enter your name as you want it displayed on the return email address, then press Next.

7. Enter your email address then press Next.

8. Complete the screen with the following information:
- My incoming mail server is a: POP3
- Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP, or HTTP) server: Enter mail.gci.net
- Outgoing mail (SMTP) server: smtp.gci.net
- Press Next
