Nearby Noatak benefits with new, upgraded service
ANCHORAGE, Alaska – GCI, Alaska’s largest telecommunications and technology company, and Teck Resources Limited (Teck) announced today that high-speed broadband internet is now operational at Teck’s Red Dog Operations, one of the world’s largest zinc mines. The groundbreaking partnership between GCI and Teck has also paved the way for expanded internet and wireless service to residents in the Northwest Alaska community of Noatak.
“This partnership is connecting many more Northwest Arctic residents with important online services, while also providing business benefits for Red Dog and our employees,” said John Egan, Acting General Manager, Teck Red Dog Operations. “This partnership supports our commitment to creating benefits for local communities in the areas where we operate.”
“Red Dog is a world-class mining operation that requires world-class internet service,” said Martin Cary, senior vice president and general manager, GCI Business. “GCI expanded our TERRA network to deliver high-speed broadband that gives Teck Red Dog Operations the tools they need to stay competitive in the global marketplace. In partnership with Red Dog, GCI was able to extend the TERRA network service to nearby Noatak. It’s truly a win/win for Red Dog, GCI and the residents of Noatak.”
Red Dog Operations is one of the most remote mines in North America, employing more than 600 people with an annual payroll of approximately $75 million, making the mine a major economic engine in Northwest Alaska.
This network upgrade enables Red Dog employees and Noatak residents to access online content and stay easily connected with family and friends. The network will also advance the performance of online business, health, education and other services for both Noatak and Red Dog.
GCI’s network expansion to Red Dog Mine was completed in December 2017, with additional wireless improvements completed recently in Noatak.
GCI provides data, wireless, video, voice and managed services to consumer and business customers throughout Alaska and nationwide. Headquartered in Alaska, GCI has delivered services for nearly 40 years to some of the most remote communities and in some of the most challenging conditions in North America.
