Each student will each receive a $2,000 scholarship for 2018-19 school year
ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Seventy Alaska students have each been awarded a $2,000 scholarship from GCI for their tuition and books during the next academic year. The 2018 GCI Scholarship Program is a $140,000 investment in Alaska’s next generation of leaders.
From Ambler to Ward Cove, this year’s scholarship recipients will attend a variety of trade schools and universities in Alaska and across the country, and represent a broad swath of the state.
“We are blown away by this year’s applicant pool; we received impressive applications from over 600 Alaska students, and picking just 70 was incredibly difficult,” said GCI Chief Human Resources Officer Joe Wahl. “Advanced education, whether through universities or trade schools, is vital to the development of Alaska’s workforce, and we hope the GCI Scholarship Program gives students the boost they need to achieve their education goals.”
The GCI Scholarship Program received more than 600 applications this year. Recipients are from 33 communities around Alaska.
“College classes are so expensive, figuring out how to pay for them can be challenging,” said King Cove’s Dylan Larsen, an incoming freshman at the University of Alaska Southeast where he will study business administration. “Thanks to the GCI Scholarship Program, that’s $2,000 less that I need to find through other means.”
The GCI scholarship program is a revitalization of the long-standing UUI scholarship program, which was supported by GCI for 10 years. Over the past decade, GCI has awarded $2.6 million in scholarship funds to hundreds of Alaska students attending accredited colleges and vocational/trade schools.
