FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Anchorage, Alaska – GCI announced its sponsorship of the Anchorage Fire Department’s first pink fire engine, unveiled today at Anchorage Fire Training Campus. Once a traditional red fire engine in rotation, the new and improved engine underwent a facelift this month, transformed to a bright pink in honor of breast cancer awareness and adorned with awareness ribbons representing all types of cancer.
Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in Alaska, but is often treatable if detected early on. The new pink fire engine has been in the works for more than three years by Anchorage Fire Department Captain Jason Dolph. Inspired by his mother’s battle with breast cancer, Dolph announced the official name of the fire engine as “Miss Linda.” He hopes the presence of the pink fire engine around Anchorage will help to increase awareness and encourage annual checkups and screenings.
“GCI is committed to giving back to the communities in which it lives and serves,” said GCI Senior Vice President and General Manager of Consumer Services Paul Landes. “Captain Dolph’s story inspired us to join his efforts in spreading the cancer awareness message across Anchorage. We’re proud to have the opportunity to support the Anchorage Fire Department to complete the new fire engine and look forward to seeing it out in the community.”
Miss Linda will hit the streets of Anchorage and surrounding communities, fighting fires and carrying the message of hope, love, strength and courage, with the goal of inspiring all who see it to have annual exams and cancer screenings.
