GCI Basic Digitization
GCI has made a commitment to the Federal Communications Commission to run an entirely digital signal for all cable television channels in all markets by December 31, 2008.
The GCI Basic Digitization Timeline shows the schedule for the statewide GCI cable markets.
Basic Cable digitization affects only customers who DO NOT already have a Digital Cable Receiver (DCT), Digital Video Recorder (DVR) cable box connected to their television.
Customers with Basic Cable service will need a cable box to continue viewing channels. Pricing for the first digital converter with Basic Service is just $2.79 per month. GCI is offering a promotion giving the first three months free. Stop by any GCI store and get your first DCT FREE for 3 months; after that pay just $2.79 per month. Each additional DCT is $5.99 per month.
With the new digital Basic Cable service come some enhancements including access to pay-per-view movies and 48 channels of GCI's digital Music Choice CD-quality audio programming. Not all features are available with the CableCARD option.
Digital Television (DTV) Transition for Broadcasters
Federal law mandating all over-the-air broadcasts be converted to digital signal by February 17, 2009. Translation: if you use a rooftop antenna or 'rabbit ears' to receive a television signal, you will need to purchase an over-the-air digital converter if your current television does not have a digital tuner or you don't wish to upgrade your TV before February 17, 2009. To help defray some of the box costs the government is issuing up to two (2) $40 coupons per household. For more information, or to apply online go to www.dtv2009.gov.
GCI Cable customers who have a DCT/DVR or CableCARD will not need to purchase an over-the-air digital converter box to receive over-the-air broadcast signal. GCI has them covered. Only viewers without GCI Cable will need to purchase a box.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Will my digital cable box work after the basic digitization? Will I need to exchange the digital box for a new one?
Current digital boxes will continue to work. Only customers who do not already have a box connected to their television will need to get one.
2. Is GCI raising preferred service price by $2.79?
Preferred Service pricing has not changed. The $2.79 cable box rental fee will only be billed to Basic Service customers who currently do not have a cable box. GCI will provide this new cable box free for the first three months. This rental fee guarantees the best quality entertainment with service or replacement of the DCT should there be any problems with the equipment.
3. I heard I will need to pay $170 for a converter or my television will become obsolete.
