Healthcare Case Studies
For years, we’ve been partnering with the healthcare industry to take their vision of a healthier Alaska and turn it into reality.
GCI helps you access an entire community of medical services while combining video, data and voice traffic on a single, private connection. We provide flexible network solutions between hospitals, clinics and doctor’s offices for centralized information access and meet your high bandwidth needs for viewing critical records, like medical imaging data. So whether it’s redesigning your voice and data network or converging everything into one network, we’ll help your business become the picture of good health.

- Geneva Woods Health Care Services
Geneva Woods Health Care Services came to us because they needed help redesigning their voice and data network as they consolidated their operations from three to one. Our client’s remodel had to be completed in phases to allow for employee moves and ongoing business operations—in other words, they needed to make massive changes while maintaining business as usual. And due to several large projects in their IT Department, Geneva Woods also had a limited ability to support a major project while managing ongoing operational support. Luckily, Geneva Woods had an existing AdvantageIP network that provided just the right framework for a consolidated Wide Area Network (WAN). However, their Local Area Network (LAN) equipment wouldn’t be able to support their facility’s new networking requirements. Our client’s existing voice system was also incapable of supporting their expanding employee base. This was just the right mix of problem solving and technology for GCI.
Multiple GCI teams came up with technical solutions to upgrade our client’s WAN and LAN infrastructure and their Voice system. Our Professional Services team took the lead and installed new network cabling throughout our client’s remodeled building and installed upgraded LAN equipment with a new Voice system. They also coordinated service delivery around construction efforts and timelines, which meant working in “windows of opportunity” to avoid interference with the remodel process. Lastly, GCI recommended a project manager to act as a liaison between everyone. While the project’s technical scope changed several times, we made an extra effort to communicate with our client and the project manager to ensure issues were resolved in a timely manner.
The remodel was highly successful. We delivered expanded WAN capability, a new LAN infrastructure into their remodeled headquarters, and implemented a new Allworx phone system. This allowed our client to consolidate their personnel and achieve significant operational savings. Geneva Woods Health Care Services now has a new Anchorage facility that not only provides a one-stop shop for their customers, but a modern telecommunications infrastructure that’s perfect for supporting our client’s business operations for years to come.
- Akeela Inc.
Akeela Inc., a non-profit offering an array of services for the prevention and treatment of substance abuse, was using Centrex phone systems through another Alaskan provider, plus DSL Internet, Long Distance and Wireless at various sites. Because all of the sites were independent, everything was a scattered. Akeela really wanted to connect their sites together and to have some control over it—not to mention, they wanted to be in compliance with regulations.
GCI quickly rallied our troops. Upon assessment of their current state of affairs, we worked fast and furiously to set Akeela up with MPLS and AdvantageIP so our client could connect their offices to a centralized work force. Our client’s main site in Anchorage now feeds Internet and dial tone to all of their Anchorage locations over our MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) network. To date, Akeela not only uses GCI Internet, but GCI TV, Local Telephone and a combination of smartphones with data and basic voice.
Akeela is happy to report they now have one person to call for everything and they’re extremely satisfied with our services and the level of support they received. Every one of Akeela’s offices statewide is now on GCI and they’ve enlisted Wireless for all of their mobile needs. Throughout the entire transfer, GCI was more proactive with solutions, more responsive with our follow-through and built a relationship founded on trust. Through our products and our people, Akeela has more control, increased productivity and response time and are finally in compliance. Oh, and they saved money with us, too. Talk about a happy ending.
- Anchorage Community Mental Health Services (ACMHS)
With numerous offices and service delivery centers in the Anchorage bowl, Anchorage Community Mental Health Services (ACMHS) still had Internet, data firewalls and voice platforms on a decentralized basis at every location. And all of this added up to extremely labor intensive service, support and IT administration, because there was no central location for ACMHS’s applications.
GCI swooped in and proposed a converged Voice, Data, Internet and communication platform that linked all locations into one single, private network for our client’s professional and support staff. Legacy voice platforms were removed and updated to a managed voice terminal on each desktop so employees could go from one facility to another and still enjoy the same features and benefits of their home office. Edge data devices were removed and upgraded to converged voice and data and Internet Protocol communication architecture, while a private and secure data network took the place of our client’s VPN links. We installed a firewall at one central location to enhance the speed of data access and file sharing.
When GCI’s work was done, ACHMS’s entire technology infrastructure had been updated and best practices in network administration were deployed by the ACMHS IT staff—no more labor-intensive service or support. Most importantly, our private network solution met all confidentiality requirements of the healthcare industry.
