Government Case Studies
Whether it’s signing legislation to help grow the economy, encourage exploration or promote responsible budgets, the Alaskan government plays a crucial role in ways we do business.

The FAA Weather Camera Program was searching for a creative use of technology to advance flight safety. Their mission: to improve aviation safety and efficiency by providing weather updates in the form of real-time camera images. The FAA’s plan was to incorporate IP services to support their Weather Camera sites, which transmit digital camera images from various locations across the state to a central location in Anchorage.
Naturals at finding innovative ways to employ technology, GCI responded. We provided IP services to more than 125 points of presence throughout Alaska, which meant our client was able to successfully meet implementation schedules, budgets and performance objectives. Now, near real-time weather images of airports and strategic en route locations are provided to pilots and flight service station specialists for enhanced situational awareness, preflight planning and en route weather briefings.
Since the FAA GCI solution began rolling out in 2008, weather related accidents have decreased by 53%. “GCI’s availability and flexibility of services, plus their standardized contract cost model, has been a big part of our overall program successes,” attested FAA Program Manager Walter Combs.
- City of Bethel
The City of Bethel had multiple departments all on the same antiquated Local Area Network (LAN), including the police department. At the same time, the City’s outdated phone system was no longer supported by the manufacturer, wasn’t in line with best practices and they needed to get it back under control. The City had been using GCI’s Dedicated Internet Access, Long Distance and Wireless Services, and were impressed by the exceptional customer service they received on those services. They asked GCI to come in, assess their network and make recommendations.
GCI provided a four-phase solution: we first resolved the wiring issues and made sure every drop tested as at least Cat5. Then we installed Force10 Power over Ethernet (PoE) switches to provide both data and power connections in one cable and integrated an Allworx IP phone system with specialized software designed for public safety. Finally, we moved their existing satellite internet access connection to terrestrial service—by way of GCI’s new TERRA Southwest system.
The results were outstanding. Our project manager worked closely with the City’s IT director, the chief of police, the dispatch system provider, and the local phone company. The City of Bethel was thrilled with the new phone system and the professionalism that our highly-skilled team displayed during implementation. Talk about a win-win!
