GCI LAUNCHES NEW TELEPHONE DIRECTORY
The Official GCI Anchorage Phone Directory Will Give
Business Customers More Value and Substantial Savings
ANCHORAGE, AK -- GCI announced today that it is
turning a new page in local telephone competition when it launches
a new Anchorage-area telephone book later this year. More than
200,000 copies of the new White and Yellow Pages phone directory
will be distributed to all Anchorage residential and business
customers in December 2003, and will include listings as far south
as Hope and as far north as Healy and Denali National Park as well
as thousands of Yellow Pages ads.
According to GCI President Ron Duncan, the new Anchorage Phone
Directory will bring more competition to the local telephone
directory market in the form of lower Yellow Pages advertising
rates for both GCI customers and non-customers.
"In our 20 years of service to Alaska, many businesses have
asked us to bring our competitive edge to Yellow Pages
advertising," Duncan said. "We've saved Alaskans millions of
dollars on their voice and data communications and we will do the
same with Yellow Pages advertising."
Duncan expects the new telephone directory product to break even
financially in 2003, and make a profit thereafter.
Paul Landes, GCI's chief marketing officer, said customers of
the new phone book will be able to double the value of their
current advertising budget by increasing the size, look and
position of their Yellow Pages ad.
Landes added that customers of all existing local phone
companies will be included in the white pages, and that GCI
customers will receive substantial discounts on Yellow Pages
advertising.
GCI will team up with ALLTEL Publishing, a division of ALLTEL
Corporation of Little Rock, Arkansas, to produce and distribute the
Official GCI Anchorage Phone Directory. ALLTEL Publishing publishes
approximately 370 directory titles in 36 states including
directories for its own telephone operations. ALLTEL's client list
includes eight Alaskan telephone companies. Most recently, ALLTEL
has developed fully-searchable Internet versions of print
directories, including the MTA Directory (http://www.mtadirectory.com),
published for Matanuska Telephone Association, which went live on
the Internet in June.
"The partnership with GCI will offer businesses in Anchorage a
choice for their Yellow Pages advertising," said Ken Beach,
president of ALLTEL Publishing. "Our focus has always been to
provide the people of Alaska with accurate, user-friendly
directories. This partnership will allow ALLTEL to represent GCI
with the same exceptional level of customer service we currently
supply in other parts of Alaska."
The directory will include residential and business listings -
and be distributed to customers -- in Anchorage, Elmendorf Air
Force Base, Fort Richardson, Girdwood, Hope, Indian, Portage,
Rainbow and Sunrise. The white pages portion of the telephone
directory will include Wasilla, Palmer, Eagle River, Chugiak, Big
Lake, Houston, Willow, Talkeetna, Anderson, Clear, Cantwell, Healy,
Denali National Park, Tyonek and Beluga.
All of GCI's local service customers who wish to be included
will be listed in the directory. In order to make the new directory
the most complete and accurate phone book in the market, GCI will
purchase the most up-to-date white pages listings available from
all other existing local phone companies serving the Anchorage
market.
The Official GCI Anchorage Phone Directory also will be
available online when it debuts in December 2003 at www.gciyellowpages.com
